Northwestern University Trustee Dan Jones ’61 and Susan Stoner Jones ’63 (’91 P) have volunteered their time for Northwestern for more than 20 years. Dan, former president of the Northwestern Alumni Association, and Susan, co-chair of her 55th Reunion this year, have always been passionate about engaging alumni across the globe. In their roles on the Florida Regional Campaign Committee, Gift Planning Campaign Committee, and Libraries Campaign Committee, they are invested in sharing and celebrating the successes of We Will. The Campaign for Northwestern.
Dan and Susan credit their “love for Northwestern and its leaders, staff, faculty, and students” for continuing to motivate their volunteer efforts.
Campaign Insider: What continues to inspire you both to volunteer for Northwestern?
Dan and Susan Jones: Our love for Northwestern and its leaders, staff, faculty, and students.
CI: What is the most fulfilling part of your work as a Campaign volunteers?
Joneses: Hearing and reading about the “We Will” successes.
CI: In what ways have your volunteer efforts made an impact on deepening the engagement and support of alumni, parents, and friends?
Joneses: As a trustee and past president of the Northwestern Alumni Association, Dan’s mentorship and encouragement of alumni to engage with each other and with the University have brought many previously uninvolved alumni into active roles with Northwestern. Susan has had similar experiences as a board member of the NU Club of Greater Naples and as co-chair of her Class of 1963 Reunion. We also attend as many athletic events as possible.
CI: How do you show your Purple Pride?
Joneses: We wear purple clothing much of the time, and to almost every event and activity in our daily lives.
CI: What other connections does your family have to the University?
Joneses: We have five other Northwestern degrees in our family, including our daughter, Katie Cavanagh ’91; her husband, Dan Cavanagh ’92, ’96 MS, ’99 PhD; and Dan’s uncle, James Strong ’41 PhD.
